Binary package hint: alsamixergui
On an Acer Aspire 5050-5554, there have been some problems getting
speakers to work. Up to 2.6.20-15-generic, alsamixergui allowed the
"surround" device to be turned on and volume set which allowed speakers
to work. (The main volume controlled the headset independently -- still
does in that kernel.)
Today (2007-6-11) I did update to 2.6.20-16
1) dmesg gives large number of hda_codec errors
2) speakers don't work
3) trying alsamixergui gives "alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed:
invalid argument"
In grub menu.lst, I returned to 2.6.20-15-generic and regained sound and
lost hda_codec errors in dmesg.
I see similar types of errors reported by others, so possibly there is
some common cause. Seems 2.6.20-16 is not ready for prime time.
