Massimiliano I have been testing your solution for a while now using the "reboot=pci" and there is good news and bad news I am afraid. The good news is that, I am able to reboot without the system hanging, and if i don't login, shutdown works too. But if I login and open any application and try shutdown, it hangs still.
What I do now is that in order to shutdown completely, I do a reboot and then shutdown from the login screen. These seems to have been problem for others for some years now, but this is my first time experiencing this, having used ubuntu 10.04, 10.10, 11.04 and 11.10. I know the devs are doing their best but its a shame when one cannot be confident that a system upgrade is not going to break anything. I used daily build from 23/4/12 for the installation and with the release due on 26/4/12, I suppose that is just it. I don't think anything can be done about it now. I am stuck with it until whenever its fixed.
