Public bug reported:
I believe there is a conflict between Nvidia x server and Unity. I just
used Nvidia X server so I could activate my dual monitors. Ever since
then Unity effects don't work, and I cannot access my display
preferences. Ubuntu 12.04, Display properties, and Nvidia x Server.
