I downloaded and installed older maverick kernels without any positive change.
After altering Grub i started kernel 2.6.35 -02 with the package restore option
and guess what one file popped up under etc/rc2.d/S99acpi-support that refers
to a non existing file on line7 => . /usr/share/acpi-support/power-funcs.
It probably has no effect on the trip_points (and it has no effect on my power
state) but just someone should take a look at the file.
The file S99laptop-mode although refers to non existing files like
/usr/sbin/laptop_mode.
Reasons might explain this line in Readme
The scripts are all symbolic links whose targets are located in /etc/init.d/ .
....and there is a laptop-mode there but no power-funcs

This is my last comment here and enjoy yourself at Ubuntu
