I never actually used Gnome shell, as it was very buggy with AMD graphic cards. I installed Gnome Shell, just to test this, and it changes the resolution, but very soon completly turns off all outputs on graphic card (monitor goes on standby), and all I can do is reset. On the other hand, changing resolution in Unity 2D works.
