Mike, I think we should file an upstream bug about this on bugs.freedesktop.org. But they will just ask if you have tested the latest version :) Are you wiling to try xorg-server 1.3 and ati driver 6.6.192? Have a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XorgOnTheEdge for packages.
