I fixed this by removing all "nvidia-*" packages, adding the nvidia PPA
(http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/ppa/ubuntu), and reinstalling
linux-headers package that match the running kernel (in my case, Ubuntu
10.04, 2.6.38-10-generic) and _afterwards_ the nvidia-current package
(280.13-0ubuntu1-lucid-xup2) (which triggers recompilation of the kernel
module), then rebooting.

I guess the problem is that the "nvidia.ko" or "nvidia-current.ko"
module is simply not being built and shipped with the package, probably
due to license issues. This file was nowhere on my system before I
reinstalled the drivers.
