I had this problem today as well.
- Downloaded ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386.iso, burned it to CD.
- Booted computer from CD, chose "Install" from opening menu
-- Installer asked for time zone, keyboard, then said "copying files"
-- After copying files, received error: "The installer encountered an
unrecoverable error...."
- Rebooted, again chose "Install" from opening menu
-- Same thing happened as above.
- Re-downloaded iso file from www.ubuntu.com, burned it to CD
- Booted computer from new CD, chose "Install" as before
-- Received same error.
- Rebooted, chose "Try" from opening menu and waited for desktop to appear
-- Clicked on desktop "Install" icon
-- Received same error as before
- Rebooted with Ubuntu 11.10 CD (made from 11.10 iso)
-- Chose "Install" from opening menu
--- Install of 11.10 worked flawlessly
---- Using Update Manager, performed all 11.10 updates
---- Using Update Manager, upgraded to 12.04 online
----- Online upgrade worked as advertised
----- That's how I got 12.04 running
