Public bug reported:

Boot the 64-bit Desktop CD. I can hear the Ubuntu desktop login sound,
but the desktop never appears. It appears as though I don't even get an
X session as all I can see is a black screen with a blinking underscore
cursor in the top-left portion of my primary monitor. I have an Asus
GTX 550 Ti with two Samsung SyncMaster PX2370 monitors. The primary
monitor is attached via DVI. The secondary monitor is attached via
HDMI. I have also tried attaching the secondary monitor using an HDMI-
to-DVI adapter and get the same result.

I also tried pressing Alt+F2 and so on to see if I could get any console
output or login on a separate console to examine some logs; however, it
will not even attempt to switch consoles.

I have also tried re-downloading and re-burning the Desktop image and
receive the same result.  I can install using the alternate install CD;
however, I get the black screen on first boot.
