This wasn't an actual package bug, but a transient I/O error experienced
by dpkg, perhaps hardware related.

Preparing to replace python-qt4 4.6-1 (using
.../python-qt4_4.7.2-0ubuntu1_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement python-qt4 ...
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/python-qt4_4.7.2-0ubuntu1_i386.deb (--unpack):
short read in buffer_copy (backend dpkg-deb during
`./usr/lib/pyshared/python2.6/PyQt4/QtCore.so')
No apport report written because the error message indicates a dpkg I/O error
