Dave- Thanks for support reply. No -I have nothing connected to output. How do I change back to analogue? The laptop is set up for dual boot. The sound when in Windows XP is working fine -loud & clear. When I boot into Ubuntu 12.04, there is a 'drum wood block' sound, But when I then sign in -there's no intro music & from then on -All sounds are off. To recap: Sound was working fine after I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 -But when I was checking out the System Settings in the Sound Section, I clicked on the 'Play Sound Through' (I think it was on 'default' or else nothing was highlighted). I then clicked on (highlighted) 'Digital Output S/PDIF Built in Audio' and clicked 'Test Sound'. No sounds came through the front right / left speaker on test. Then I noticed all other sounds were not working in Ubuntu (apart from the little startup 'drum wood block' sound. Your help in restoring this is much appreciated. +p drinan

You selected digital audio output. Do you have anything connected to that output? If not, can you not change back to analog?
