Lilleman, it's possible you see similar bugs between different versions of ubuntu but their causes might be different.
For example, there is a serious performance problem with the nvidia 295.40 driver in 12.04 --> bug 982710. So yes, please do try a different driver/card to test so we can figure out if this is a general issue or not. Also, you say the problem existed in Ubuntu 10.10 for you, meaning it was a problem before Unity. Can you please try logging in to a Unity2D session (select on the login screen) to compare. And also try a "Gnome Classic" session (may require installing "gnome-shell" package).
