Using Precise and Gnome 3.4, after 5 hours of intensive task switching
between vmware player and other linux programs, no crashes yet. I would
normally have had to restart the shell a few times at the very  least
during this sort of workload.

It's possible gnome-shell 3.4 contains the fix to this problem - can
anyone else confirm / refute?
