My view as to why this happens is that /etc/iftab is not correct when the upgrade starts, and that although this doesn't seem to bother breezy, it kills dapper. I know this to have been the case for several of the instances I have seen of it (e.g. NIC died & changed, machine cloned and iftab not updated) though I thought it happened at least once on a box where iftab should have been OK, and somebody else said the same thing i.e. that it failed on boxes where there was no reason for iftab to be wrong.
