The source of the problem is in ubi-language.py in the on_link_clicked
function (line 350).
Ubiquity simply uses the gtk url hook to call sensible-browser, my guess
is that for some reason sensible-reason doesn't get called as the right
user or with the right environment to be able to talk to the running
firefox.
