NeuroMancer: could you please
(1) attach your '~/.fontconfig' file that you believe is working
(2) confirm that if you move it out of the way, the fonts appear differently.
(3) take a screenshot of before, and after
(4) highlight (eg. red circle/red arrow) which character combinations look
particularly bad
