A few points:

1) I didn't file this bug against a specific package because I am not
able to identify the source. There are some Grub-related issues, but the
actual error message I see contains references to dbus and X11. I can
recategorize this ticket if somebody tells me where it belongs (or how
to figure it out myself)

2) Fabio: Thanks for the reply. As mentioned in the ticket, I did not
modify grub.cfg directly, and have no changes to make in
/etc/default/grub. When I run update-grub, it produces the WRONG list of
entries. It produces entries for Ubuntu 11.10, when I have just upgraded
to 12.04 (and the terminal printout says "Ubuntu 12.04", but the
grub.cfg still contains listings for Ubuntu 11.10).

3) Meanwhile, I cannot boot into Ubuntu 12.04 no matter what I do with
grub. The results are the same with the same weird dbus error flashing
on my screen and no UI (I'm also not able to switch to a different TTY
and log in that way, I've tried).

I am going to try to put together an install CD and just re-do the whole
thing. I was hoping I would find a better solution before that.
