Using 1.4.0 with Precise, I can reproduce the same issue. But as far as I can say, me-tv doesn't freeze while importing the channels. Having > 500 channels defined in a channel.conf, it takes a very long time to import, but the timestamp of the sqlite3 db is updating, its size is increasing and there is a lot of I/O traffic.
Maybe the import routine just isn't very effective. Right now it seems that importing takes at least the same amount of time than scanning the channels with w_scan.
