The system invited me to update to the new release 12.04 LTS
After the install, the following directories (used by gedit 3.4.1) were missing
~/.local/share/gtksourceview-3.0/language-specs
~/.local/share/mime/packages
These directories contain information for the markup of user-defined languages 
and their mime types.
