This seem to be related to frame buffer mode. If I enable text mode console in the grub script, then the console Ctrl+Alt+Fx works fine. But when returning to the graphic screen Ctrl+Alt+F7 the screen is totally corrupted. Moving the mouse repaints the screen back to normal. So far it has not locked up but this maybe pure chance. Also disabling splash in grub stops the corrupted text characters during boot. Perhaps plymouth uses frame buffer mode too?
