Thank you Alejandro. I was able to successfuly install the 295.33 driver through terminal on Precise 12.04. To stop it updating to a higher version of that particular package, I then then installed synaptic package manager and locked the 295.33 package so it cannot be updated. I will leave it that way until a stable version of 295.40 is available. I am sure this has been suggested before but perhaps Canonical should enable the 295.33 driver to be installed in the interim until a proper fix is found for the current 295.40 driver as this is affecting tens of thousands of users.
