Did you kill the wpa_supplicant process after installation? (Or reboot?) If that doesn't work the other choice that worked for me is to install openssl 1.0.0e from 11.10 (and reinstall the default wpa_supplicant). My problem with that solution is the older version of openssl caused library problems with 12.04's curl. But you may not use curl so it might not be an issue in your case.
