I confirm the bug in 12.04 amd64 (sony vaio vgn-ns31s). In 11.10 amd64 everything worked fine. In 12.04 I can still record the sound (i.e. with sound recorder) but I cannot control the microphone volume (inactive slider) and so on, so the recordings are very quiet. The only way I can control my microphone now is alsamixer: terminal - command: alsamixer - it shows card: HDA Intel, chip: Realtek ALC262. All options are available: mic boost, volume.
