I confirm the bug in 12.04 amd64 (sony vaio vgn-ns31s).
In 11.10 amd64 everything worked fine. 
In 12.04 I can still record the sound (i.e. with sound recorder) but I cannot 
control the microphone volume (inactive slider) and so on, so the recordings 
are very quiet.
The only way I can control my microphone now is alsamixer: terminal - command: 
alsamixer - it shows card: HDA Intel, chip: Realtek ALC262. All options are 
available: mic boost, volume.
