Dough: You don't need to edit any system files. Use this to alter Unity
greeter's settings:

sudo xhost +SI:localuser:lightdm
sudo su lightdm -s /bin/bash
gsettings set com.canonical.unity-greeter draw-grid false
exit

Use "gsettings list-keys com.canonical.unity-greeter" to find other
configurable options
