Seeing the same problem here on a desktop machine when doing dd of 40GB image.
Couldn't log in via ssh until dd was finished.
This was repeated in dmesg every 120 seconds:
[ 2520.696276] INFO: task ionice:2393 blocked for more than 120 seconds.
Colin: your suggestion
echo 10 | sudo tee /proc/sys/vm/dirty_ratio
Seems to have fixed the problem for me. Thanks.
