This bug also affects me and it seems to be different from these bugs:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/888762
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/957759
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/977135

Whenever I close the lid, the laptop freezes immediately. When the
laptop is in the process of shutting down when the lid is closed, the
laptop will keep running (and the fans will spin up as well). I
configured the laptop not to go to sleep when the lid closes but it
doesn't make a difference.

Suspend and hibernate worked fine in my previous install (ubuntu 11.10).

I have a dell studio 1555 running
Ubuntu 12.04 final
x86_64 on linux 3.2.0-24-generic.
Video card: ATI RV710 [Mobility Radeon HD 4500/5100 Series]
Driver: Catalyst 12.4
fglrx 8.96.7
