A workaround is to use 'sudo' (or login as root) to operate within the
non-writable directory.

I also noticed this, any file named 'desktop.ini' within the non-
writable directory is also non-writable, even though it has the 'w'
flag.

$ pwd
/media/data/My Documents
$ groups
aviator adm dialout cdrom floppy audio dip video plugdev scanner netdev lpadmin
powerdev admin
$ ls -l desktop.ini
-rwxrwx--- 1 root plugdev 75 2007-02-21 15:52 desktop.ini
$ rm desktop.ini
rm: cannot remove `desktop.ini': Permission denied
