So there is still hope that updated drivers will be made available by Nvidia. For the time being, In my opinion it would have been necessary to put a warning into the release notes of Ubuntu 12.04. I've got a slow computer and during the upgrade I by chance even saw the text "removing nvidia-96" scrolling by, but at that moment it was already far too late to think about staying on Oneiric.
