One final observation to make, re-attempting the upgrade fails reliably
at the same point. The process is hung after printing:

update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.0.0-17-generic

qps shows the process tree as dpkg -> sh -> sh -> mkinitramfs ->
mkinitramfs -> modprobe; awk.

I expect this is quietly generating the "task modprobe:639 blocked... "
messages mentioned previously.
