I did a clean install of 12.04 and have been experiencing this a few times per day also on with my nvidia 8600 GT card. That was with nvidia- current-updates at 295.40. Never saw this problem on 11.10. You will see a xorg server segmentation fault in the log file when this happens. I installed the 295.49 driver from nvidia site and get the same seg fault. Then installed the 302.07 beta driver and still see the seg fault.
