Public bug reported:

I do not know if this is a bug. I have installed every ubuntu distribution for
at least the last 5 years and the latest distro 12.4 which I installed as a
fresh install is the only one that I have had any sound problems with. I have
tried all the usual basic things to prove drivers and sound cards are visible
and loaded and I cant find anything wrong. Everything else appears to be
working well including compiz and the cube.
The sound has been off from the first boot after installation and before
anything else has been installed or altered.

yours hopefully,

Graham Innes
