I can add a little to the information above. I've Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0bda:8172 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8191SU 802.11n WLAN Adapter With vmlinuz-3.2.0-24-generic, kern.log included the following, after (I think, merely) typing "ifconfig": Apr 29 09:42:17 asparagus kernel: [ 52.248060] WARNING: at /build/buildd/linux-3.2.0/mm/vmalloc.c:1438 __vunmap+0x40/0x50() Apr 29 09:42:17 asparagus kernel: [ 52.248065] Hardware name: Apr 29 09:42:17 asparagus kernel: [ 52.248067] Trying to vfree() bad address (3a36303a) Apr 29 09:42:17 asparagus kernel: [ 52.248071] Modules linked in: bnep rfcomm bluetooth binfmt_misc dm_crypt snd_hda_codec_realtek snd_hda_intel snd_hda_codec snd_hwdep snd_pcm snd_seq_midi snd_rawmidi sn d_seq_midi_event snd_seq ppdev snd_timer snd_seq_device snd parport_pc soundcore snd_page_alloc r8712u(C) mac_hid lp parport usbhid hid vesafb 3c59x floppy Apr 29 09:42:17 asparagus kernel: [ 52.248129] Pid: 1790, comm: ifconfig Tainted: G C 3.2.0-24-generic #37-Ubuntu
.. and a call trace (I can supply if needed). The part implicating the dongle seemed to be: Apr 29 09:42:17 asparagus kernel: [ 52.248381] EIP is at firmware_free_data+0x30/0x60 In general 3.2.0-24 was subject to hangs/freezes when trying to anything involving the network (like reporting a bug). I then booted vmlinuz-3.0.0-17-generic, the last kernel under 11.10, and it (continued to) work fine. I then tried a couple of recent upstream kernels, the last being 3.4.0-999-generic #201205060405. They both worked fine, so far as the dongle was concerned. But both these seemed to have serious ext4 bugs (to do with ext4_mb_generate_buddy, brought on using rsync). So, devil vs. deep blue sea. (I cannot explain why Fernando had problems with 3.4-rc.) By the way, the link: http://www.kernel.org/doc/local/git-quick.html#bisect at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Bugs appears to be broken. ** Attachment added: "cuthere" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/985365/+attachment/3133825/+files/cuthere -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/985365 Title: On remove usb rtl8192su (r8712u module) wifi card - kernel error (kde screen corrupt and comp stop working) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/985365/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
