** Description changed:

  What you expected to happen

   The system goes to suspend

  What actually happened

-  The screen goes black and the system is completely unresponsive. I can
- hear the fan going faster and faster to a point. The light indicating
- access to hard-drive remains on the whole time. It can stay like that
- for 7 hours or perhaps more until I press the on/off button for about 5
- seconds to turn it off.
+  The screen goes black and the system is completely unresponsive. I can hear
the fan going faster and faster to a point. The HD-access-light turns off and
then on and remains on the whole time, (although I can hear the hard-drive
turnoff.)
+ It stayed like that overnight until I pressed the on/off button for about 5
seconds to turn the laptop off.

If possible, a minimal series of steps necessary to make it happen,
where step 1 is "start the program"

By clicking on the gear at the top right and then clicking on
  'Suspend'.
