After trying several proposed fixes last night, I was only able to login using
ctr+alt+F1, logging in via console and then "sudo gdm" to get to a working
login screen.
Even after applying all the most recent patches this AM (EST) and permitting
and installing NVDIA-current PPA I still have the same problem.

I, too, disabled the annoying drum for when the login screen shows up
several days ago (don't recall how I did that though).

Greeter.log attached

Thanks!
