I have the same problem. I have installed 12.04LTS many times and by various means. CD and USB with the exact same results. ASUS A7V8X-MX main board, 120 GB hard drive, Athalon 2600 processor, and 1 gig of memory. I tried to upgrade 11.10, Failed. New install 12.04 failed. I reinstalled 11.10 and it works fine. 12.04 will run if you run it from the CD or USB without installing it.
