I appear to have been able to work around this problem by installing Kubuntu 11.10 and then updating to Kubuntu 12.04 through the Update Manager. Both Linux Mint 11 and Kubuntu 12.04 are now working on this laptop. There are still a few things that are not working how I expect them to but that is the learning curve when you try new programs. Maybe the original 12.04 Live CD was corrupted in the download or burning process. I have had that happen before.
