When did your wlan network card last work? Prior kernel? Prior version
of Ubuntu?

The driver never actually worked. After some time, 30 minutes or 10 hours, it
always presented these problems. I'm using this kernel now, since it's more
stable:
pio@piobox:~$ uname -a
Linux piobox 3.0.0-17-generic #30-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 8 20:45:39 UTC 2012 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

What is the make and model of the access point you are connecting to?
Happens with my D-Link G640T and Thomson Technicolor TG580v2.

If you change the settings of the WiFi access point (encryption type, mac
address filtering, A to G or N to G, etc.) does it change anything?
I've tried different configurations, no luck. I still need to try without
encryption or WEP.

If you use wpa supplicant, does anything change?
You mean manual connection? I have to read wpa_supplicant manual :P
