I think that this is the relevant part of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log file:

Module intel: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
        compiled for 7.2.0, module version = 14.94.94
        Module class: X.Org Video Driver
        ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 1.1

Using this driver has also resolved (at least to a large degree) the 
issues I was having with connecting an external screen to the laptop too.
