Public bug reported:

Every Unity session after certain (yet unknown) events such applications
as GIMP and Java applets (javaws) start not occurring into the taskbar.
Precisely what happens: when I run GIMP, its icon is shown in the
taskbar for a while and then disappears forever. Consequently, there is
no way to access such windows from GUI if one minimizes them. Once
happened in a single session, these apps do not appear in the taskbar
until reboot.

I have encountered this bug three times already, but concrete causes are
yet to be discovered.
