Blender 2.43 does not support 64bit for real, I guess thats the problem.
I am working on getting blender 2.44 into feisty-backports (that version
works well on amd64), at the moment you can use the packages available
here:
http://ppa.dogfood.launchpad.net/lfittl/ubuntu/pool/universe/b/blender/
