Thank you for your bug report, what version of unity-greeter do you use? It seems you describe 2 issues there, the first one is that login fails on profile errors (which arguably are an user error), the second is the hang issue which seems similar to bug #986967, which has been fixed in https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-greeter/0.2.8-0ubuntu1.1
