I've got a lot further with this problem since my last post. I've managed to get 11.10 to load and I'm able to use it successfully although when ever I log off, before I can start the computer again, I have to run the recovery option. Once that's done I can start 11.10 and away I go. It works so I'm happy.
I've also managed (today) to get optimus working (bumblebee 3.0 ... congratulations guys) and it successfully uses the nvidia GPU and runs like a hare, being about 18 times faster than the integrated Intel graphics processor. Awesome.
