Public bug reported:

This machine (Thinkpad T520) is connected to a Lenovo Advanced Mini Dock
Series 3 (?), marked "type 4337". The dock has a green 3.5mm stereo
audio output on the back, which has a background crackle that the output
on the side of the laptop doesn't. The crackle is loud enough to be
noticeable, although audio can otherwise be heard clearly, and is
somewhat worse when the mouse (USB, connected to dock) is moving, or
with CPU or disk (SSD) activity.

I'm aware this may just be bad hardware design and not fixable in
software. :-)

There is a worse bug with HDMI audio output which I am about to report
separately.
