Correction/completion to my previous comment:
The CPU usage of hud-service is constantly at 3-4% on this machine when
the "System Load Indicator" (a panel indicator) is running.
When I quit System Load Indicator, it the CPU usage drops to nothing (as
long as HUD is not in use).
I wrote a new bug #1001072 for System Load Indicator.
