What's the text in the buffer which is featured in the screen shot? If it's not runes, I don' think this third-party font has the glyphs for the characters you are trying to show. If so, this is not a problem in Ubuntu, but with the font and/or how you are trying to use it. (Reference: <http://www.thesauruslex.com/typo/hniaseng.htm>)
