unfortunately, there are so many different bugs with the current ubuntu sound system you may have more than on problem, which makes things tough to figure out. i have three different computers, none especially exotic, and all three had at least to or three different problems (although my ferrari 4000 now works out of the box in feisty). you may want to check some of the other bug reports.
