@#108, I've tried to follow instructions in #99, that is adding 
ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates. Only one package was updated : 
xserver-xorg-video-intel. Still freezing.
I also tried to install fglrx that are proprietary drivers. Still freezing, 
both with kernel 3.2.0.24 and kernel 3.3.6.
Now system looks more broken as message are over written during boot screens

My mobo is GA-MA78G-DS3H, AMD 4850e, with integrated RS780 [Radeon HD 3200] 
from ATI Technologies Inc
System is Ubuntu 12.04, only usable via Ctrl-Alt-F2 console. 

And no, I do not want to convert to lynx and mutt.
