I have the exact same problem and I have not found a solution yet. We
both did 11.10 to 12.04 upgrades (in my case, I used kubuntu-alternate),
we both use logitech unifying receiver/keyboards.

I am able to successfully enter my password and boot into linux when I
used a kernel from 11.10 (linux-image-3.0.0-19-generic). I've tried
reinstalling the kernels, grub2, and update-initramfs.

Wish someone could point me in the right direction. I'm truly lost!
