Yes, it wouldn't work in dconf-editor because the setting is for the
lightdm user, not for your user (or root). The easiest method to disable
the login sound is probably the following:
Create a file named:
/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/unity-greeter.gschema.override
with the following contents:
[com.canonical.unity-greeter]
play-ready-sound=false
And then run:
sudo glib-compile-schemas /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/
