Same issue as OP here with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Unity 2D. Clicking 'compose new message' brings up the expected window, but clicking on 'email' yields no visible reaction. Actually one is not able to access one's mail through this bug. This unfortunately renders unity2d completely useless to Thunderbird users.
